Eric Bates
Principal

Eric is a founding partner of PSG Tax Credits Group. He brings over a decade of experience specializing in federal and state Research and Development (R&D) Tax Credits and in that time has helped his clients sustain well over $100 million in claimed credits.

In 1999, Eric co-founded Professional Tax Contracting Services (PTCS), a specialty tax consulting firm focused on providing “niche” tax services in the areas of sales and use tax compliance and consulting and R&D Tax Credit calculation and substantiation assistance. Eric successfully grew the R&D Tax Credit practice, working with several Fortune 500 companies in industries such as ASIC semiconductor design and manufacturing, networking and network security, computer peripherals, cloud computing (software-as-a-service), vehicular electronic systems (audio/video/navigation) and consumer products.

Eric's experience encompasses all aspects of the R&D Tax Credit from initial project scoping and feasibility analysis to delivery of the completed calculation and contemporaneous support documentation. Eric also has extensive experience assisting clients with exam and appeals. Eric has performed R&D Tax Credit studies for a wide range of companies, including a number of large clients with annual sales of over a billion dollars. He also regularly advises small- to mid-sized companies as to how they too can take advantage of this credit.

Prior to founding PTCS, Eric spent 10 years in Manufacturing Operations Management including several years as Director of Manufacturing for a Silicon Valley company. Eric's manufacturing background and experience allows him to “speak the language” of the engineers he interviews, helping his clients bridge the gap between tax and engineering — the key to a successful R&D Tax Credit study.

Eric and his wife Kim reside in Folsom and have two daughters, Abbey and Emily. Eric's favorite family activities include traveling, teaching the family dog new tricks, watching movies together and pursuing a black belt in Taekwondo (along with youngest daughter, Emily).

Eric graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.S. in Political Science from California State University, San Jose.
